“Could you take care of dinner tonight?”
If someone asks what they can do, you can give them the job you actually need help with, not the smallest favor you feel comfortable asking for. “Could you bring dinner tonight?” or “Could you wash the laundry and put it away?” is easier to act on than “I need some help.”
With a partner or someone sharing the care, you might say, “I’m struggling to keep track of everything. Could you take responsibility for dinner this week, including deciding what we’re having?” The help should take something off you, rather than leave you answering questions about it all evening.
A turn when you aren’t the one on call
If a trusted adult can care for your baby, try being clear about the time you need: “Could you look after the baby from six to seven so I can eat and shower? I need you to handle that time.” Rest doesn’t have to wait until the house is tidy.
Make sure the person knows your baby’s care needs and the feeding and safe-sleep guidance you’ve been given. Questions about feeding, sleep, or your baby’s health belong with your baby’s clinician, not this page. What matters here is arranging help that lets you step away from being responsible for everything for a while.
If you’re doing this without someone to hand over to
I don’t want to pretend everyone has a partner nearby or family who can come over. If you don’t, you could ask your clinician’s office or a local family-support service, “I’m caring for my baby without much help. Are there any local services or parent groups that could offer practical support?” Ask what they offer, whether you’re eligible, and what it costs. Availability varies, and they may not be able to arrange immediate help.
Food, rest, and help with the day matter. But if you’re feeling persistently low or anxious, tell your doctor as well. You shouldn’t be left trying to solve those feelings with a better routine.
